Arsenal host Wigan Athletic at the Emirates in the FA Cup 4th round. The Lactics currently sit tied for 22nd in League One, a point from safety with a game-in-hand that would take them out of the relegation spots. It’s crowded down the bottom of League One — there are seven clubs within three points of each other, two of whom will be relegated. We know the story with Arsenal. The Gunners could do with a palate-cleanser performance after an uninspiring showing against Brentford midweek.
Wigan beat
Championship side Preston North End 1-0 in the FA Cup 3rd round. It’s their only win this calendar year. They’re currently on a four-match losing streak. Their 42 goals against is lower middle of the pack. Their problem is scoring. They’ve scored the third-fewest goals (31) in League One.
There’s really not much to be said about this match. It’s one that Arsenal’s rotated lineup should be able to handle with relative ease. Famous last word, right? The Gunners need to avoid the “magic of the cup,” get through the game healthy, and go next. Easy enough (hah).
Arsenal will be without Kai Havertz, who is expected to miss a bit more time with a muscle injury. Martin Ødegaard picked up a minor knee issue that he downplayed in his captain’s letter in the Arsenal program. He shouldn’t miss too much time. As we know, Mikel Merino is almost certainly done for the season. William Saliba returns to the lineup after missing out with illness. Bukayo Saka is on the bench.
