Jays 3 Marlins 5
Kevin Gausman looked good at the start of the game. He gave up his first hit to lead off the third, Troy Johnston getting the hit, but then Johnston was caught stealing. But the next batter homered.
Then in the fifth Johnson singled again (soft liner (79.9 mph) infront of Daulton Varsho, I kind of thought that he should have caught it). Next batter rolled one towards third, Clement made a valiant try but a 52.8 mph single. The next one was bunted, and Tyler Heineman jumped on it, throwing
to third for a great play that got the leadoff runner. It was very close, I expected a challenge.
But then a walk and a Jakob Marsee triple put us down 4-0.
Gausman went six innings allowed seven hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.
Yariel Rodriguez pitched the seventh, getting two quick outs and then a Marsee double and a Agustín Ramírez RBI single. There was also a steal, a wild pitch and a walk but a ground out ended the inning. Rodriguez looked like he lost confidence or something after the first hit against him.
Paxton Schultz pitched a quick eighth.
On offense, we only had two hits again Eury Pérez through six innings.
In the seventh, Bo led off with a single and Ty France followed with a walk, which ended his day. Six innings three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Then Daulton Varsho gave us hope with a home run, making it a one-run game.
We had a chance in the seventh. With two outs, Bo and Nathan Lukes took walks. Vladimir Guerrero came in to pinch hit (his first action since August 18th). He got to a full-count, but popped out. Then we went 1, 2, 3 in the ninth.
We had just four hits, Bo had two. Varsho and Schneider had the others.
Bo had an error on a easy grounder, but it didn’t cost us.
Jays of the Day: No one had the number, but I’ll give one to Varsho for the three run homer.
Other Award: Gausman (-.118), Clement (-.109), and Gimenez (-.093)
Tomorrow, the Jays are back home against the Twins. Joe Ryan (12-6, 2.96), the Twins’ ace, goes against Max Scherzer (4-2, 3.60), who’s been pretty terrific himself.
Jays are 4.5 games up on the Red Sox, pending their game with the Yankees.
