It seemed like the perfect time for the club to arrange a pre-season friendly in Dublin, where Sunderland would take on Shelbourne FC, and on a sunny midweek evening in the Irish capital, hundreds of Sunderland supporters, — including this writer — made the journey from both near and far to Tolka Park on Dublin’s north side.
Having just suffered relegation in humiliating circumstances, the timely announcement of Niall Quinn’s takeover from Bob Murray added a level of excitement to a fixture that otherwise
would’ve been viewed as little more than a routine summer friendly.
I recall sitting in the stands, clad in my red and white stripes, cheering as the giant that was Quinn strode past, saluting his people while we lavished the man dubbed the “saviour” with praise at a time when the club was on its knees.
Moments later, my attention shifted to a Newcastle supporter who couldn’t have been much older than my twelve-year-old self.
He shuffled sheepishly past the Sunderland end, dressed head to toe in black and white, enduring a relentless chorus of abuse from the home crowd. Looking back, I can’t help but wonder whether anyone had thought to inform him that his choice of attire wasn’t exactly suited to the occasion.
The game itself was about as memorable as most pre-season friendlies and a quick glance back at the record books reminds me that, fittingly, it was two Irishmen who found the net, Daryl Murphy opening the scoring before Rory Delap added a second after the break to secure a comfortable Sunderland victory.
With little transfer activity beyond the arrival of Kenny Cunningham, it was clear the squad still required significant rebuilding if it was to compete in the Championship, yet Murphy’s form throughout pre-season offered supporters a genuine reason for optimism. The young striker looked settled, confident and, perhaps for the first time, ready to fulfil the potential many believed he possessed.
Speaking after the match, Murphy reflected not only on the excitement surrounding Quinn’s takeover but also on his own hopes for the season ahead.

I only played at centre forward once last season and, even then, I still think I only got half a game. I don’t really think I’ve been able to show what I can do up front yet.

To his credit, Murphy backed up those words, opening his league account on the first day of the season against Coventry before flourishing under the guidance of another influential Irish figure, Roy Keane, whose arrival would transform both Murphy’s career and Sunderland’s fortunes.
Looking back now, Quinn’s takeover and Keane’s appointment represented the beginning of one of the most captivating chapters in Sunderland’s modern history.
At the time, none of us could’ve known of the twists and turns that awaited, but the foundations were already being laid for a remarkable journey shaped by two of Irish sport’s most influential figures.
