Bayern Munich supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been sounding off on many topics of late.
Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch asked if he could see Bayern Munich taking another run at struggling Germany international and Liverpool attacker Florian Wirtz at some point in the future, Rummenigge recused himself from that kind of decision.
“First of all, that’s not my job. It’s a matter for the board. And we mustn’t forget that Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry play in that position, and there
are other options as well, such as Ismael Saibari. There’s no need to spend the kind of money that Wirtz would probably cost to sign a fourth player for that position. That’s why I say — before making any move, a player needs to think very carefully about it,” Rummenigge said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
However, Rummenigge did indicate that you never know what the future might hold.
“Whether something might still be possible at some point? I don’t know. The question is whether Wirtz is happy at Liverpool. I can’t judge that. Uli and I were in contact with his father and mother for a while. Then they decided to take a different path, and we respected that,” Rummenigge stated.
When asked if he was surprised that Wirtz was still struggling at Liverpool, Rummenigge admitted that it was a bit shocking to see the former Bayer Leverkusen star still scuffling.
“To be honest, yes. We were given the impression that he chose Liverpool because the manager back then, Arne Slot, had promised him the #10 position — the role he had also played at Leverkusen. That was an important factor in his decision to join Liverpool. There were no big differences financially. He made his decision, and we accepted it,” said Rummenigge.
