The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade story has been through enough twists and turns to qualify as a season and a half of Stranger Things, but the tale may be coming to an end. Per Shams Charania of ESPN, the MVP-level forward is ready to move on from the Milwaukee Bucks and find a new team to play for. Up until this point, Giannis has always said publicly that Milwaukee is his long-term home. The winds may be shifting and we could see a deal as soon as February.
Charania released the news on X this morning.
Giannis has twice won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award, taking the honor back-to-back in 2019 and 2020. He led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA Championship. He’s also won Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, and has won nine straight nominations to the NBA All-Star roster.
Antetokounmpo is currently averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and just shy of 6 assists in 29 minutes per game over 30 appearances for the Bucks. He shoots 65% from the floor and 40% from the three-point arc. The 31-year-old is in his 13th NBA season. His current contract runs through 2028. He’s making $54.1 million this year, rising to $58.5 million next season, finishing with a $62.8 player option in 2027-28.
This year’s NBA Trade Deadline falls on Thursday, February 5th.
