Joelinton is expected to miss several weeks after suffering a groin injury, with Newcastle United seeking further medical clarity, Eddie Howe said before the Magpies’ Champions League match against Paris
Saint-Germain.
Joelinton was forced off in the 48th minute of Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa and will miss Wednesday’s trip to Paris.
“Joe won’t make the game,” Howe said. “He’s had a scan, we don’t think it’s a bad injury, but he’ll possibly be out for a few weeks.”
Howe confirmed the midfielder will seek additional medical advice.
“He’s going to see another opinion just to make sure we’re on the right lines with that,” Howe said. “So although he won’t be out for a long time, he’ll miss a few games just because we’ve got so many fixtures.”
The setback adds to Newcastle’s growing injury list as they approach a demanding run across competitions. Six of their next seven matches at the time of the announcement are away from home, including fixtures against PSG, Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa.
Howe, however, made clear that the team must be prepared regardless of availability.
“I would never say that there’s a player that can’t be replaced,” Howe said. “But we have to learn to play if he’s not available. Hopefully he can be.”
Newcastle returns to action on Saturday when they will visit Liverpool for a Premier League game at Anfield.
