We’re now only a couple of weeks away from the March 28 super welterweight title defense between reigning titleholder Sebastian Fundora defending against challenger Keith Thurman. Both fighters have just appeared for a virtual press conference and to answer media questions, and here is some of what both had to say with the full video in the link at the top.
Fundora on Thurman saying he’s never faced a fighter as experienced as him
“OGs aren’t really in the sport no more, you know. So once you get old in this sport you shouldn’t be boxing no more, that’s what I think. but
I fought a lot of fighters. I just see Keith Thurman as another one.”
Fundora on why a fight against Xander Zayas didn’t come together
“I don’t pick the fights. These guys, the promoters and PBC, they pick them for me. It is what it is. He has two belts right now, I have a belt, we can still unify. It never happened but that fight can still happen so I’m not worried about it.”
Fundora on how he thinks his skills matchup against Thurman
“I think my skills are better, that’s why we’re fighting him. I’m the champion, I’m defending my title, and I plan on keeping my title come March 28.”
Thurman on facing Fundora
“He’s going to see. He’s going to bring it. He needs to do what he always has done…He’s confident and he feels like he’s growing…He’s going to see what an OG can do and the name is ‘One Time’ for a reason, not a short season. March 28, he’s going to find out.”
Thurman on being in the backend of his career
“It’s definitely the second leg of the race…This is where the legacy is written or not. The legacy will be written here and now or it will be something that was. But great champions, they become champions again. And you can’t stop a true champion from rising to the top…I’ve been here before and I’m here to make a statement and do as much great things as I can until we hang these gloves up. But we’ve got a few more years…”
