How can the Minnesota Vikings beat the Detroit Lions? Simple—exploit Jahmyr Gibbs. On the latest episode of The Real Forno Show, host Tyler Forness and producer Dave Stefano broke down the Vikings’ key to victory, a wild NFC North trade ahead of the deadline, and why Brian Flores’ defense could be the ultimate difference-maker on Sunday.
The show opened with blockbuster news: the Chicago Bears acquired DT Jeffrey Simmons from the Tennessee Titans for two first-round picks and a fourth. Forness questioned
the fit within Dennis Allen’s read-and-react scheme: “If Simmons comes in and it’s just Jeffrey Simmons, it’s not gonna matter that much.” The Bears still lack edge rushers, raising questions about whether the move translates. Meanwhile, the Vikings have been reportedly aggressive in the run up to the deadline, with names like Maxx Crosby and Jalen Carter circulating. “If you bring in Jalen Carter, that’s become the centerpiece of your defense,” Forness said. “That is the guy that you are building everything around.” He emphasized that such a move wouldn’t be for 2026 alone—it would be a long-term foundational piece, especially with Andrew Van Ginkel and Kyle Van Noy hitting free agency. Forness was blunt on the quarterback front: only Daniel Jones and Kirk Cousins, both familiar with Kevin O’Connell’s system, make sense as trade targets. “You’re not trading for great players at this point. You’re trading for somebody who you hope can steer the ship.” On J.J. McCarthy’s departure, he added: “He got himself traded. The Vikings didn’t do it because they wanted to give up on him. He earned it.”
The heart of the episode centered on neutralizing Gibbs in pass protection. Last Christmas, the Vikings forced Gibbs into a career-high 15 pass-protection snaps—over 35% of his total—resulting in seven pressures and a sack. “They made it so Gibbs was basically ineffective because of their blitzing and how they attacked,” Forness explained. With Van Ginkel, Blake Cashman, Ivan Pace Jr., and Dallas Turner matching up on him, the plan is straightforward: make Gibbs block, or take him off the field entirely. Stefano noted the broader impact: “By having him pass block, he’s not out in their patterns either.” Flores’ defense, refined over three seasons, has reached what Forness called his “opus” and a “pile driver onto a steel chair.” Stefano captured the confidence: “Our defense does. They know what they’re doing. The question is, how quickly can Goff figure it out? And I don’t think anybody’s figured it out this season.” Forness agreed: “I do think that this defense is good enough to win a Super Bowl on their own.”
Key Points:
- Gibbs exploitation: Vikings will blitz in the 70–85% range, forcing Gibbs to pass-protect or leave the field
- Flores’ finalized defense: Three years of refinement into a system nobody has solved
- Trade deadline: Maxx Crosby and Jalen Carter as long-term defensive cornerstones; Daniel Jones as affordable QB insurance
- McCarthy’s exit: Talent was never the question—”He got himself traded”
- Offensive key: Kyler Murray must “take a deep breath, play more relaxed, and trust Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison”
- Lions’ defensive weakness: 30th in EPA per play, 31st in explosive play percentage allowed
- Prediction: Vikings favored by 3–3.5; Forness picks Minnesota: “I think they’re gonna be able to take down Goff”
