In a season of goodbyes and regrets, the Dominik Szoboszlai free kick became one of the few bright lights to look back on in a season to forget. The Hungarian captain’s early effort against Arsenal has made the short list for Premier League goal of the season, coming back in August when Liverpool were in a strong position as league title holders.
Szoboszlai went on to score four free kick goals across the 2025/26 season, one short of a record for single-season direct free kick goals (5, held jointly
by David Beckham and Laurent Robert). (Given that David Beckham holds the “most all-time” free kicks scored in the Premier League with 18, this is no small feat.)
The Liverpool midfielder (and auxiliary right back) is one of 10 to be nominated, and supporters’ votes make up one portion of the award process. Liverpool fans can vote here for Szoboszlai’s strike here, though it does require an account on the Premier League official site. Voters can also watch the full list of nominees; happily, Szoboszlai’s effort was scored earliest and thus comes first, making it easier to put this season behind us.
The award is sponsored by Guinness this season.
