Big news, big news, Liverpool Football Club won their first match of the season — and their first under new boss Andoni Iraola. The victory came on an away trip to Ipswich Town where two swift, early goals from Alexander Isak sealed the deal.
Goals at six and nine minutes into the game became an unconquerable hurdle for the newly promoted side to overcome.
Both goals came from Isak, but equally, they were supplied by fellow attacker Cody Gakpo.
After the game, Gakpo was asked about his brace of assists,
and Gakpo jokingly declared that Isak now “owes” him.
“Obviously, as attackers we always train together and we try to get to know each other even better every time again. Hopefully we can assist each other many times – he owes me a few assists now!” he said.
The first win of the season always feels special, and Gakpo hopes it’s something that the team can build on now to gain some momentum going forward.
“Hopefully beautiful things ahead,” said he said. “We had a good pre-season together and we have to build on that. A first win – hopefully the first of many. Outstanding support, like always. We are all together.”
Despite the transfer drama surrounding him over the summer, Gakpo remains a Red, at least for the time being. It’s good to see him embrace the opportunity to start these first three games. After Friday, he’s picked up three assists and scored one goal of his own. Hopefully this portents good things to come this season, if the Gakpo / Isak partnership continues to grow.
