Chris Eubank Jr is currently scheduled to rematch Conor Benn in a middleweight prize fight on Nov. 15, and despite plenty of talk and suggestions of him walking away from the sport at age 36, Eubank tells Sky Sports that ge believes he still has it and isn’t looking to retire with gas left in the tank.
“I still feel fresh. I still feel capable. I still have that hunger and that fire and that desire to get up to train every day, to better myself as a fighter, to perform in front of the fans. So retirement
is just not in my mindset right now. You guys are going to be seeing me for a while.”
Eubank Jr says even his father had urged him to consider retirement following his win over Benn earlier this year after a surprise showing, but he believes that his father just can’t understand how fresh he feels in his current state.
“He had the conversation with me and I told him, ‘this is not the time, old man’. He retired at 32 so in his mind he can’t understand how I’m still doing what I’m doing at 36. So I get it. But he’s not me. He doesn’t feel what I feel in the gyms and in these rings,” Eubank Jr said.
To support his position Eubank Jr points to his final round with Benn where he unloaded a furious number of punches, which he says demonstrates both his fighting passion and intact physical abilities. Eubank, of course, was hospitalized after that fight which may suggest there was an obvious physical toll taken on him, but he says that was strictly down to the rehydration limits that didn’t allow him to fully replenish himself after the official weigh in.
Eubank will obviously have to deal with those same circumstances this time around, but he’ll at least be doing so with a tremendous financial benefit.
