All of the sudden, it’s been almost a month since Mizzou won a football game.
That’s sort of hard to fathom. For the past two and a half years, we’ve become pretty used to Mizzou winning most of their games.
You have to go back to early October 2022 for the last time the Tigers lost three games in a row. You know, the days when Luther Burden III was just a crafty freshman and Brady Cook was having to fend off hate from his own fanbase for beating Sam Horn to the starting job?
But here we are. The Tigers are starting down a tough stretch to end the year, with one final home game against a scrappy Mississippi State team before consecutive road trips to Norman and Fayetteville. The season is far from lost, but it’s undeniable that the Tigers are in a bit of a slide. And without a win next weekend, it could become debilitating.
Look, it’s a big task. The offense is going to struggle while Matt Zollers gets his feet under him. Defenses will key in on the run and make the true freshman beat them. The defense is going to get tired earlier in the game. The special teams won’t be able to bail the Tigers out like they usually do. And the rumors around Eli Drinkwitz will swirl in the ether until the administration (or Drinkwitz himself) does something about them.
But this is when the culture of a program is stress tested. And the culture at Mizzou, for all intents and purposes, appears to be healthy. The Tigers can confirm that by recovering against the Bulldogs.
Stop the slide. Send the seniors off well in their last home game. Something to prove (I don’t know, I was searching for a third ‘s’ thing.)
