The numbers from this transfer window are pretty striking.
The Premier League has spent a staggering €4.12 billion on transfers, while bringing in €2.51 billion. That leaves the English top flight with a massive €1.61 billion negative transfer balance.
The Bundesliga? €783.8 million spent and €821.2 million in income, giving the league a €37.41 million positive balance.
That is an enormous difference.
And from a Bayern Munich
perspective, this is where the discussion gets interesting.
Bayern Munich are not afraid to spend when they believe a player can make the team better. The additions of Ismaël Saibari and Nathaniel Brown show that Bayern Munich are willing to invest in the squad. But the club also operates with a clear expectation that money coming in matters just as much as money going out.
The Bundesliga as a whole appears to be following a similar philosophy.
While Premier League clubs can spend hundreds of millions more because of the financial power of their television and commercial markets, Bundesliga clubs are showing considerably more discipline in the transfer market.
Does that make the Bundesliga financially healthier? Or does it simply demonstrate the enormous competitive advantage Premier League clubs have when it comes to spending power?
Bayern Munich may be the Bundesliga’s biggest spender, but the league’s overall transfer balance is certainly worth talking about.
