Queretaro shocked Chivas by getting a 1-0 victory that ended Chivas’ four match winning streak. An early goal allowed surprised Chivas, who dominated the match after that but missed a number of clear chances.
Chivas now needs to bounce back for Saturday, where they face Atlas in the Clasico Tapatio while Queretaro travels north to face off against Santos Laguna.
The 1st half started with a very offensive lineup. That lineup seemed to go against them when after Ruben Gonzalez lost the ball, Jonathan Perlaza got off a left footed shot that was blocked by Chivas’ goalkeeper, Raul Rangel but right into the path of Ali Avila scored into the open net to give Queretaro the 1-0 lead. A cross into the area was volleyed wide by Santiago Sandoval. Off a free kick, Efrain Alvarez got off a shot that forced Queretaro’s goalkeeper Guillermo Allison to make a save. A cross by Alvarez forced Allison to clear it as Chivas was going all in on Queretaro. A cross into the area was deflected into the path of Armando Gonzalez, who from close range sent his left footed shot wide in a bad miss. A cross into the area would reach Sandoval but he got off a terrible volley that sent his shot backward instead of forward in another bad miss. Alvarez got a shot off in the area that went wide. A cross into the area fell to Gonzalez, who from close range skied his shot in another chance that Chivas wasted. A cross into the area was headed by Sandoval but Allison made a great one handed save. On a 1 vs 1, Lucas Rodriguez got into the area but his left footed shot went wide. The halftime whistle blew and even while Chivas had dominated play, it was Queretaro who was taking the lead to their dressing room.
The 2nd half started with Chivas subbing out Armando Gonzalez and Omar Govea for Teun Wilke and Roberto Alvarado. Queretaro subbed out Ali Avila for Jhojan Julio. A free kick by Alvarez was deflected wide. A pass into the area reached both Wilke and Bryan Gonzalez but a Queretaro defender was able to clear the ball just before either could get off a shot. Chivas subbed out Jose Castillo and Efrain Alvarez for Erick Gutierrez and Hugo Camberos. On a 2 vs 2, Julio got a good chance but tripped in the area and although he asked for a Penalty Kick, nothing was given. An injured Bryan Gonzalez was subbed out for Cade Cowell. A cross into the area was headed wide by Wilke. Queretaro subbed out Lucas Rodriguez and Jaime Gomez for Mateo Coronel and Omar Mendoza.A longball to Coronel had him 1 vs 1 against Rangel but he took too long to get off a shot and his cross was deflected by Rangel, in a incredible wasted opportunity. A right footed shot from outside the area from Coronel would go just wide. Queretaro subbed out an injured Jonathan Perlaza for Carlos Villanueva. On another 1 vs 1, Coronel this time would get the ball past Rangel but he was blocked from getting to it by the goalkeeper, who fell on the ball. A cross into the area was cleared just out of reach of Wilke. A shot from outside the area from outside the area from Eduardo Armenta was blocked by Rangel, but he left the ball to Coronel, who lobbed the ball over Rangel but then he couldn’t get to the ball well enough to get off a shot and it went wide with an open net. A cross into the area was headed by Cowell but right to Allison. After getting late to a play, Richard Ledezma got his second Yellow card and thus a red, which means he won’t be playing in the Clasico Tapatio. The match would end and Queretaro got the surprising victory over a Chivas side that deserved a better result.
Chivas’ four straight match winning streak came to an end in surprising fashion on Wednesday night. While Queretaro was the home side, they have one of the weakest squad and Chivas was coming in hot. The match itself had Chivas constantly dominating possession and missing a number of chances with Armando Gonzalez especially having a poor match. Chivas will need to pick it up for Saturday when they face another edition of the Clasico Tapatio against their city rivals, Atlas. Queretaro meanwhile got the early goal and had a number of counter attacks in the second half, where they could have also easily gotten a second goal but had a number of misses. They will have to travel north to face off against another struggling side in Santos Laguna.
