Mike Evans practiced Friday for the San Francisco 49ers. That’s a good sign for his availability in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
However, rookie pass rusher Romello Height missed Friday’s session. Height had hand surgery earlier in the week after breaking it, and his status for Sunday was always in question. He was ruled out for Sunday.
The only other players who weren’t on hand were players you’d expect to miss: Nick Bosa (calf), James Thompson Jr. (ankle), and Demarcus Robinson (ankle).
Here’s the final injury report:
DE Nick Bosa (calf)
WR Demarcus Robinson (ankle)
DT James Thompson Jr. (ankle)
DE Romello Height (hand)
QUESTIONABLE
WR Mike Evans (hip)
One reporter asked whether it feels like Groundhog Day with all of the injuries. Kyle Shanahan said, “Losing Bosa was rough yesterday. Losing 6 out of the 10 d-linemen in the last two weeks that made our team is a little unusual. Don’t think I’ve been a part of that. That has been different.”
Enough players to start and two depth pieces in two games at one position. Unusual, indeed.
Kyle Shanahan explained that Bosa’s injury occurred when he was warming up doing high knees before the official team stretch: “He does his warm-up deal, right before walkthrough. He does his own warm-up on the side. Just got his calf doing it.”
Shanahan said the injury happened right before practice.
Shanahan didn’t put a firm timeline on Bosa’s return, but said, “guessing around a few weeks.” The original question was whether Bosa would miss “months.”
The injury isn’t expected to impact Bosa long-term. As for the injured reserve, “it’s a discussion. He’s right there at that point, along with a couple of other guys that are in the same boat.
Because of the number we have on it, we won’t be able to do all of them. So we’ve gotta decide. We’re just trying to guess which ones go longer, which ones have the chances of being sooner. It’s just a guess. They’re all close in the same boat, so gotta decide that tomorrow at 1.”
If Bosa doesn’t land on the injured reserve, that’s relatively good news. It’s a sign that Bosa’s injury may not keep him out for four games.
Shanahan sounded confident that Bosa will play again this season, saying, “I know he was bummed out, but he’ll be back.”
