While not quite the offensive fireworks of the first two games of the series, yesterday’s 5-3 extra-innings win was nonetheless just as impressive as the first pair of wins. The bullpen outside of Devin Williams was lights out to keep giving the offense a chance to win it, something they finally did with a string of clutch ABs in the 11th inning. Today, they look to keep the pressure on the Blue Jays (currently just two games ahead) and complete the four-game sweep of Chicago to win their eighth
in a row.
Luis Gil has looked more like himself with each successive start after a rocky season debut that was delayed four months by injury. He has given up two or fewer runs and pitched at least five innings in each of his last four outings and has surrendered just one home run in his 24 innings of work. The walk continue to be an issue, Gil issuing 17 free passes across five starts. Overall, he is 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA (110 ERA+), 3.95 FIP, and 22 strikeouts in 24 innings.
Martín Pérez spent much of his career with the Rangers, with whom he was an All-Star in 2022 and won a World Series in 2023. However, the lefty veteran has been something of a journeyman the last handful of years and is now with his sixth different organization. His fastball will barely touch 90 these days, so instead he relies on an even mix of cutter, sinker, and changeup to keep hitters off balance. In seven games (six starts) Pérez is 1-3 with a 2.02 ERA (211 ERA+), 2.95 FIP, and 32 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.
Giancarlo Stanton returns to the Yankees lineup and gets the start in right field. Trent Grisham gets a rare day off, Cody Bellinger sliding over to play center and José Caballero coming in to play left. Amed Rosario gives Ryan McMahon the day off at third base.
The White Sox make a pair of changes to their lineup from last night. Edgar Quero comes in to play catcher, moving Kyle Teel to DH and Andrew Benintendi to the bench. Michael A. Taylor gets the start in center field, meaning Brooks Baldwin starts on the bench.
