What is the story about?
We know where we’re goin’
We know where we’re from
We’re leavin’ Babylon, y’all
We’re goin’ to our Dots’ land
- It was not a banner weekend for the most visible Husky sports teams. Luckily, US Men’s and Women’s Hockey gave us other things to divert our focus. Women’s Basketball had a tough but winnable home match-up with Nebraska on Sunday. The Huskies led for most of the second half and it looked like Sayvia Sellers sealed the game with a basket to go up two inside the closing 30 seconds. Unfortunately, Nebraska answered with a step-back three in the closing seconds to win by a point. The loss puts a dent in UW’s resume for an at-large bid, but he Huskies are still in good shape if they can close strong.
- Huskies Softball traveled to California for the Mary Nutter classic. The first five games all went to the higher-ranked team, with UW going 3-2. The last of those five was not a normal loss, though, as the Dawgs were smashed by Oklahoma in a game where they just couldn’t get outs against the powerhouse Sooners. They had to play again later in the day and dropped the finale in a disappointing upset to Loyola Marymount. While I’m not in any player’s head, I suspect that the aftereffects of the OU game played a part in the later upset.
- While it wasn’t a competitive win, Husky Football did get a recruiting victory on Sunday to balance some of those defeats. The Huskies secured the commitment of Matamatagi Uiagalelei. The DL prospect profiles as a similar type of inside/out hybrid to his brother Ta’ita’i, who is currently part of the UW DL room. The younger brother had an impressive list of offers, including Michigan, Miami, and Auburn. Dawgman has an interview where Matamatagi explains his motivation for the commitment.
- One Husky sport that got a W over the weekend is the Women’s Tennis team, which is a team that has made winning a habit this season. The Dawgs came into the matchup with #30 San Diego undefeated and ranked #17 in the country. Despite stiff opposition, UW swept through USD to improve to 7-0 on the year.
