EUGENE, Ore. — A banner week for Illinois. Not so much for Oregon.
Fresh off the Illini football team clinching its first 10-win season since 2001 by defeating No. 15 South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl, the Illini men’s basketball
team joined in on the fun Thursday night, upsetting a talented Oregon team on the road.
One day after the Ducks’ football team got its doors blown off in the Rose Bowl, No. 22 Illinois handed Oregon another big loss. The Illini earned a marquee resume win, knocking off No. 9 Oregon 109-77 in the Illini’s first of two back-to-back Big Ten games out west.
After the opening five minutes, Illinois (10-3, 2-1 Big Ten) dictated the style of the game, even against a veteran-led Oregon (12-2, 1-2 Big Ten) squad. Running and gunning down the court, the Illini nailed 16 three-pointers in their best shooting performance in a high-major game since beating Arkansas on Thanksgiving.
Fresh off a 117-point outburst against Chicago State over the weekend, the star-studded Illinois offense was on full display throughout the game. Oregon stuck around for the first twenty minutes, before Illinois completely blew the game open. Sophomore bench pieces Jake Davis and Dra-Gibbs Lawhorn played big roles in the strong first-half offensive showing, combining for 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting in the first twenty minutes.
Illinois’ seven-point halftime lead ballooned to 23 points before the first TV timeout of the second half, mainly thanks to Ben Humrichous’ trio of three-pointers.
Despite relatively quiet nights from Tomislav Ivisic and Will Riley, Illinois still managed to score 109 points against a top-20 defense in the country.
When Brad Underwood constructed this roster, a performance like he saw Thursday is what he had to have pictured. Five different players made at least two threes, while two made at least four. The team shot 55% from deep altogether.
But Illinois didn’t just nail threes. The Illini got to the rim whenever they wanted to. Of their 102 points, 48 came in the paint.
Oregon’s previous season-high in points allowed was 81. Illinois reached that total with more than nine minutes left in the game. Anything Illinois wanted, it got.
Now 3-2 against ranked teams this season, 2025 is shaping up to be another great year for the Orange and Blue.
