Despite only having a 6-0 record, Andy Cruz is one of the most well-regarded fighters on the rise and will get his first shot at a major world title in an upcoming IBF title fight against Raymond Muratalla
on January 24. Leading into the fight his Matchroom promoter takes fans behind the scenes of his training camp where we get a look at a ‘day in the life’ of Cruz.
“This fight is the most important fight of my career. At this moment I just had to prove it, and that’s what I’m doing, put on a great show and remain the champion that night,” Cruz said, despite being the challenger in this fight.
“Since arriving in the United States I always knew I had what it takes to be here…I am aware that every fight will be more difficult for me. As I climb the ranks, the fights gets harder. This is my first opportunity for the title so for preparation each camp has to be with more intensity, with more desire, more heart so that I can achieve my goal.”
Cruz operates out of Bozy Ennis’ gym in Philadelphia, often working closely with Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis who says Cruz was an easy talent to spot, knowing the first time he saw him spar that he would quickly go places in the professional ranks. Bozy Ennis, who acts as Cruz’s lead trainer, would explain how he’s only tried to mold Cruz by adding to his game rather than trying to change his style.
“My style comes from Cuba,” Cruz says. “So rather than changing it I made adjustments, a combination of Cuban boxing and a boxing style learned here can give good results…Talent without work is nothing.”
