It’s official: The Southeastern Conference will adopt a nine-game football schedule beginning in 2026.
While a nine-game SEC schedule could have meant the end of the Governor’s Cup, the league included one safeguard: “SEC teams are required to schedule at least one additional high-quality non-conference opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Notre Dame each season.”
It’s pretty much a lock that Kentucky will choose Louisville to continue filling that slot. BBN Tonight’s Maggie Davis confirmed that UK
plans to keep the Governor’s Cup going.
The matchup, renewed in 1994 after a 70-year hiatus, has been played every season since except for 2020 due to COVID-19. Kentucky holds a 20-16 advantage in the all-time series, though Louisville ended a five-game losing streak with a win in 2024.
ESPN’s reported offer of an additional $50 to $80 million annually in media rights revenue helped sway the SEC officials toward expansion.
