On Thursday morning, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell announced that rookie receiver Kendrick Law suffered a torn ACL during a non-contract drill this week at Organized Team Activities.
“Hate it for him,” Campbell said. “The kid was doing a good job, but that’s… it’s part of it. It’s a harsh reality, but he’ll get that out of the way early, have his whole career in front of him.”
Law was one of the Lions’ fifth-round picks, with Detroit trading a sixth-round pick to move up 13 spots and grab him at
168 overall. General manager Brad Holmes was excited to see how much more Law had under the hood after being used as mostly a gadget player at Kentucky.
“I was fired up about just what he did offensively,” Holmes said about the first time he saw Law play in person. “I had no idea about his special teams ability. That’s what really elevated him even more, and not just a return like a Leaf, but this guy can play gunner. He’s four-phase special teams player. He’s another one, he’s a dog, man. He’s a football player.”
Unfortunately, it appears Detroit will likely have to wait a year to see what Law can do. While the Lions have not officially placed him on injured reserve yet, this injury is likely to sideline him for the entire season.
Detroit’s receiver room still looks pretty strong with starters Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa firmly in place. The reserves who will now battle for subpackage and special teams roles include Greg Dortch, Dominic Lovett, Tom Kennedy, Jackson Meeks, Malik Cunningham, and Cedrick Wilson Jr.
