It was VERY NEARLY a perfect night for Bayern Munich in Bergamo for the first of two legs in the Champions League round of 16 against Atalanta, but a late Mario Pašalić, albeit a mere consolation for the Serie A side, robbed Bayern of a clean sheet on the night. Still, Vincent Kompany’s side came away 6-1 winners and take a massive aggregate lead back to the Allianz Arena for the return leg, though they’ll be without both Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise due to yellow card accumulation suspensions.
To round out the scoring for the Bundesliga champions, it was a brace from Olise and goals from Josip Stanišić, Serge Gnabry, Nicolas Jackson, and Jamal Musiala, stamping their seal on what was a completely dominant performance. Quite frankly, Kompany might even be leaving Italy feeling that his side could’ve scored more than six goals from the thirteen shots on target they registered.
For Olise, it was another man of the match performance with his two goals and assist to boot and perhaps the only negatives on the night for the Frenchmen were not getting a hat-trick and picking up the yellow that caused him to be ineligible for the return leg. Other than that, it was another masterclass of a performance for Olise, taking his Champions League goal tally on the season to three with his only other goal in the competition coming in the win over Pafos FC.
After the match, in typical, nonchalant Michael Olise fashion, the French winger recognized what a decent match both he and his teammates had to come away with such a comprehensive leg one victory. “It was a really good game and I feel very good. Personally, I think I played well and it was a solid performance. Now they have to come to our stadium, so we’ll go there with the same mentality and try to win again,” he said (via @iMiaSanMia).
For a man of few words, you’d expect nothing more and nothing less from Olise, even after such an incredible performance away from home in the knockout stages of Europe’s biggest competition.
Never change, Michael.
