Earlier this season, JJ Redick mentioned that the best players in the NBA are showmen. They love being on the grandest stage and putting on an incredible performance for an audience that demands it.
In the NBA, there is no stage bigger than the playoffs. It’s a circumstance where the best can cement their legacy either by winning as a Laker or by beating the franchise synonymous with greatness.
For Luka Dončić, being out for the postseason is a difficult place to be. The showman has to sit feet away
from the action, unable to help his team reach their ultimate goal.
“I don’t think people understand how frustrating it is,” Luka said after a recent practice. “All I want to do is play basketball, especially at this time. It’s the best time to play basketball. It’s very frustrating. Seeing what my team is doing I’m very proud of them. But it’s been very tough.”
Dončić has done everything possible to expedite his return, including going to Spain for treatment. However, his original timeline for return was eight weeks, and there has been no indication that he will be back sooner.
Since Luka suffered his hamstring strain in early April, that means he likely won’t be back until the end of May. And unless the Lakers beat the Thunder, that means he won’t be back this year.
That’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially when you consider how well the Lakers were playing before Dončić went down.
“We had an amazing month of March,” Luka said. “The injury came in the worst moment, probably, for me, but I think other guys have stepped up really good. But it was very frustrating for me.”
Despite Luka’s absence, the Lakers have extended their season. They eliminated the Rockets in the first round. Doing that when most people thought they brought Luka plenty of joy.
“Everybody had us out,” Luka said. “Everybody had us out in five or six games and we proved it that we can play. The way everybody stepped up was truly amazing to see. So hopefully they’ll continue that.”
A lot of life is luck. One does their best and hopes their hard work is recognized and that they have an opportunity to accomplish what they want.
However, sometimes things beyond our control take opportunities off the table. In sports, injuries are the ultimate x-factor, and Luka got unlucky getting hurt so late into the regular season.
Now, all he can do is rehab and cheer on his teammates as they try to pull off another upset.
