The Cincinnati Bengals selected edge Cashius Howell during the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Bengals only played Howell during one preseason game this year, which was a testament to how highly they valued what he did throughout training camp.
In that lone preseason game, Howell showed exactly why he shouldn’t have even lasted to the second round in the draft. Howell combined with Kris Jenkins Jr. for a sack against Detroit.
The former Texas A&M standout went to his patented spin move that
is giving offensive tackles fits already this year.
During the Bengals ‘ season-opening victory against Tampa Bay, Howell was credited with just one pressure during the game. However, he drew a holding penalty and should have been credited with at least .5 of a sack, combining once again with Jenkins.
The Buccaneers tried to slow him down with a tight end; that was not a good idea.
Howell continuously showed off his explosiveness to generate quick pressure.
The performance on Sunday against the Houston Texans was the most impressive game to date for the young rookie edge rusher. Howell was credited with six pressures during the game. He caused havoc from both sides of the line and played as many snaps as starter Myles Murphy.
One thing that stands out besides his pure explosiveness is just how deep his arsenal of pass rush moves are. He is able to keep offensive tackles guessing on what he is going to do next, and he goes from move to move so smoothly, even in the same rep at times.
While Howell has not been credited with a sack yet, his impact has been undeniable. It won’t be a bit surprising when he has a two- or three-sack game soon for Cincinnati. Early returns on this draft pick are showing a home-run selection for the Bengals.
Howell should garner consideration for Defensive Rookie of the Year honors if he continues playing at such a high level.
