Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries hasn’t ever had a player over seven feet tall on any of his rosters as a head coach.
He was asked about the frontcourt pairing of the 6’11” Aiden Sherrell and 7’2” Samet Yigitoglu during a media availability on Thursday. He praised Aiden Sherrell’s abilities as a 3-point shooter and versatility with the ball but, when he got to Yigitoglu, just smiled.
“He’s a big, big guy,” DeVries said. “He’s not afraid of knowing that he’s big either. He knows what
he is and he likes it. When he sets a screen, people are gonna feel that.”
DeVries went on, explaining that Yigitoglu can play in the short roll or down in the post with his physicality alongside Sherrell will be a lot of fun for the staff to work with during the summer as they look to find new ways to play them off of one another.
Yigitoglu committed to Indiana before taking an official visit, signing with the program afterward and joining the staff to take in the football program’s spring game. He averaged 10.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 62.8% from the field in 28.9 minutes per game for SMU last season.
