It felt a little like a “proud dad moment” when listening to Luke O’Nien speak on a recent episode of the High Performance Podcast. Not because I consider it the pinnacle of sporting interviews, but because of the journey O’Nien has been on since arriving at Sunderland and where that journey has ultimately taken him.
I’ll happily admit that when I first watched him in Sunderland colours against Charlton Athletic all those years ago, I never imagined his career on Wearside would develop into what it’s
become. Like many supporters, I saw a player who worked tirelessly, but I never expected him to become one of the club’s most important and admired figures.
As the years passed, however, it became clear that O’Nien possessed something many footballers do not: an infectious enthusiasm, an unwavering mentality that enabled him to bounce back from setbacks and, perhaps most importantly, a determination to succeed rather than simply a hope that he would. Those qualities have not only shaped the player he has become, but also the person that Sunderland supporters have grown to admire.
To me, O’Nien’s presence at the club represents the new Sunderland that began to emerge during those difficult years in League One.
For too long beforehand, the club had been filled with players who possessed undeniable talent but lacked the hunger, commitment and desire for self-improvement required at the highest level.
Sunderland’s decline was fuelled by millions spent on reputation rather than performance.
Too often, the club chased names instead of finding players with the character and mentality needed to represent the shirt, and many of those players are now perhaps better remembered for entertaining stories away from the pitch – including appearances on the excellent Under The Cosh podcast – rather than for the impact they made during their time at Sunderland.
That is not a criticism of the podcast, which provides brilliant insight and plenty of humour, but it does highlight the contrast between two very different eras at the club.
The stories from that period often centred around nights out and dressing room culture, whereas the modern Sunderland is increasingly defined by professionalism, standards and a desire to improve – and that mentality is embodied by O’Nien.
His journey from a player many supporters were unsure about into one of the most respected figures at the club is a reminder that talent alone isn’t enough. Character, resilience and the willingness to constantly improve can be just as important.
With leaders such as O’Nien and Granit Xhaka now helping to shape the direction of the club, there are genuine reasons for supporters to feel excited about what the future holds.
The story of Xhaka asking O’Nien to deliver the pre-match speech before the home fixture against Newcastle United perfectly demonstrated that connection. It showed that the people arriving at Sunderland understand where this club has come from, what it means to supporters and where it wants to go.
Perhaps that’s why listening to O’Nien speak felt like such a proud moment. Not because he became the player everyone expected him to be, but because he became the player Sunderland needed him to be.
In many ways, his story mirrors the club’s own journey: knocked down, questioned and underestimated, but determined to prove people wrong.
With a man like O’Nien in the dressing room, supporters can only hope that he continues to inspire the next generation coming through.
