Wake Forest Head Coach Jake Dickert has unveiled the depth chart for Wake’s season opener against Kennesaw State.

For the offense, the biggest surprises to me would be redshirt freshman Clinton Richard winning the job at left guard and Tate Carney dropping off the chart at RB in favor of Ty Clark III and Jamario Clements. Other than those two, I think everything kind of shook out the way we expected. Tight end and wide receiver appear to be “by committee” positions as of right now, which makes sense
given how many players the Deacs had to get in the portal in the offseason at those positions.
On the defensive side, there really aren’t any surprises to my eye. Having just 1 returning player in the mix at corner back is probably for the best given how bad Wake has been at that position over the past couple of years. Linebacker should be a position of strength with 2 very good options at both spots. The defensive line, which is replacing all 4 starters from last season, seems like it’s going to rotate quite a few big bodies in and out of the game.
As for special teams, redshirt freshman Connor Calvert winning the starting job from Matthew Dennis is not surprising, given Dennis’s struggles making field goals over the past couple of seasons. The other thing that stood out is Demond Claiborne will not be returning kicks this season, which probably makes sense if the whole offense is going to predicated around his ability to run the ball. There’s no reason to risk an injury to your best player for a few extra yards of field position.
We are just a few days away from football!
Go Deacs!
