The Chronicle is back to profiling players and first up is Rice transfer Ifeanyi “Iffy” Ufochukwu. A 6-11 grad student, Ufochukwu will start at third on the depth chart at center and will almost certainly stay there.
That’s not written in stone of course. He’s 6-11 and athletic and is probably a better pure athlete than either Pat Ngongba or Maliq Brown, the two guys who are in front of him, and he could easily emerge as Duke’s best shot blocker. He was also an AAU teammate of Caleb Foster’s.
From
the Chronicle article: “While [Ufochukwu ] lacks elite starting ability for Duke, his athleticism and frame stand out as high-end traits. Ufochukwu has displayed flashes of a developing post game, and his opportunistic offensive rebounding creates second-chance looks for both himself and his teammates…Ufochukwu possesses the lateral quickness to defend most wings on the perimeter, although he is far more productive swatting shots and defending the rim down low…the graduate transfer offers a new dynamic to Duke with his unique blend of size, motor and physicality.”
We’re not expecting a huge season out of Ufochukwu, but somewhat like Antonio Vrankovic, Matt Christensen and Justin Robinson, he could have some big moments at unexpected times for Duke.
