On Saturday night at Oriental Sports Center, UFC Shanghai went down, with Umar Nurmagomedov facing Song Yadong in the main event and a potential title shot on the line. Nurmagomedov was a massive betting favorite, coming in at nearly 6 to 1 in some places, but nobody told Song, who ended Nurmagomedov’s title hopes with a vicious second-round knockout.
The loss is devastating for Nurmagomedov, who spent much of this week talking about pursuing a rematch
with Merab Dvalishvili instead of his bout with Song. On the flip-side, Song is now firmly in the title mix at 135 pounds as his thrilling KO shook up the pecking order of contenders and also sent the MMA world into an uproar.
