The first round of the College Football Playoffs is in the books, with the following results:
- #9 Alabama 34, #8 Oklahoma 24 – Bama will play #1 Indiana next
- #5 Oregon 51, #12 James Madison 34 – Oregon will play #4 Texas Tech next
- #6 Ole Miss 41, #11 Tulane 10 – Ole Miss will play #3 Georgia next
- #10 Miami 10, #7 Texas A&M 3 – Miami will play #2 Ohio State next
What are some of your thoughts on the first round games?
I was disheartened to see both Group of 5 teams get blown out. JMU did make the final score at least look competitive, but still lost by 17. Tulane lost by 31. In both games it was obvious the underdog was a skilled team, but didn’t quite have the speed and talent of their Power 4 opponents. It will be interesting to see what the committee does about
G5 teams going forward, as some other teams were left out this year, specifically Notre Dame and Vanderbilt. Would the Domers and Commodores have fared better?
You have to be at least a little sad for Oklahoma fans. 0-5 in playoff games, and this year having a 17-0 lead over Bama before losing by 10. I was rooting for them, if only because I didn’t think Bama should have been in the playoff in the first place.
Man, Texas A&M fans have got to be feeling some kinda way right now. Best season in a long time, only to lose to their most hated rival, miss their conference championship game, and then fail to score a single touchdown in their first home playoff game. That’s quite a tumble after what was an auspicious start to their season – albeit against the bottom half of the SEC, but still.
We’ll have a later article that starts looking at the second round games, for now I just want to know what y’all thought about the first round. Let’s hear it!
