Heading into their preseason finale on Friday against the Tennessee Titans, the Minnesota Vikings have traded away a player that’s been a very solid contributor over the past couple of seasons in a move that, honestly, I’m not sure I understand.
Per numerous sources, led by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Vikings have traded defensive lineman Harrison Phillips to the New York Jets. In return, the Vikings will receive a 2026 sixth-round pick and a “swap of picks in 2027,” though I’m not 100%
sure what that means at this point.
Phillips was signed by the Vikings as a free agent before the start of the 2022 season after he started his career with the Buffalo Bills. He signed a three-year contract that offseason, and signed a two-year extension with the Vikings in September of last year that would have had him under contract to the team through the end of the 2026 season.
The Vikings did quite a bit to add to their defensive line this offseason, signing Jon Allen and Javon Hargrave in the free agent market, and it was thought that Phillips would be the third member of the Vikings’ defensive front along with those two. However, the Vikings appear to be comfortable enough with the way their younger players at the position have looked, most notably Jalen Redmond, Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, and undrafted free agent Elijah Williams, that they felt comfortable in dealing him away.
Phillips has been a very good player on the field for the Vikings during his three seasons in purple, and has also been a big part of the Twin Cities community, establishing a branch of his “Harrison’s Playmakers” charity in Minneapolis to go along with the ones he established in his native Omaha, Nebraska, and in Buffalo.
It doesn’t appear that the Vikings got a whole lot in return for a player of Phillips’ caliber, but this move will allow them to save a decent amount of cap space, saving approximately $8 million this season and $7.5 million in 2026. Hopefully the Vikings are right about their young defensive linemen and they won’t miss Phillips’ presence on the field too much.
Let us know what you think of the Vikings trading away Harrison Phillips, folks. I’m sure that quite a few of you will have some thoughts on it.
UPDATE: A couple of things that came out while I was typing this up.
First off, Adam Schefter is reporting that the trade will bring the Vikings a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. We’ll have to see which reports are accurate when the team makes an official announcement.
Second, it’s being reported that the Vikings will be paying half of Phillips’ salary for this season, meaning they’ll move $3.7 million off the books for this year and the $7.5 million for 2026 mentioned above.
UPDATE: The final terms of the deal are Phillips and a 2027 seventh-round pick going to the Jets in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick. So there you have it.
