It’s hard to overlook what former CFL wide receiver Dohnte Meyers has done thus far into training camp and the preseason. In fact, Meyers’ performance has likely secured his spot on the Cincinnati Bengals’ 53-man roster.
A 26-year-old product of Delta State University, Meyers was someone who didn’t get much attention heading into training camp, and rightfully so. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are the best wide receiver duo in football, while Andrei Iosivas is a solid No. 3 option.
Meanwhile, rookie
Colbie Young was always likely to make the roster as a fourth-round draft pick, while Mitchell Tinsley and Charlie Jones have done enough in the past to think their spots were secure entering camp.
Not so fast, as Meyers has been arguably the most pleasant surprise on the entire roster thus far. That includes his two preseason outings thus far, in which he caught eight of 10 targets for 70 yards to go with two runs for 22 yards. He’s also returned two kickoffs for 54 yards and three punts for 45 yards.
That seemed to be enough for Meyers to make the roster, but as mentioned above, there’s some stiff competition with Jones and Tinsley for those final spots.
However, Wednesday’s practice likely ended any debate that Meyers is making the cut.
It first began during practice when Meyers was actually running with the starting offense and catching passes from Joe Burrow. That lone is a sign that Meyers is in no danger of being cut.
But that’s not all.
After practice, Burrow and Meyers reportedly spent about 40 minutes working together.
That’s not something a veteran quarterback like Burrow is going to do with someone who’s getting a pink slip this weekend when final cuts are made.
In other words, Dohnte Meyers is all but guaranteed a spot on the Bengals’ 53-man roster when it’s finally set on Sunday following final cuts.
