All season, Bayern Munich had a loaded weapon in its holster, but often chose not to use.
During the team’s miraculous 3-2 comeback victory over SC Freiburg, head coach Vincent Kompany got the exact kind of result he wanted when he needed that weapon — Tom Bischof — the most.
Bischof, again, started out of position at left-back and was having a decent (not great) game for 80 minutes. In the 81st minute, though, he would turn the team’s fortunes around.
A terrific goal in the 81st minute gave Bayern
Munich hope, while his second tally — in the 2nd minute of added time — absolutely made the team believe a win was possible.
After Joshua Kimmich, Alphonso Davies, and Lennart Karl combined on the game-winner in the game’s waning seconds, the comeback was complete and Bayern Munich had snared a 3-2 victory from the jaws of defeat.
For Bischof, this was part of his journey. Not often used (and hardly ever in his real position of the central midfield), Bischof has stepped up when needed (remember the assist in added time vs. Union Berlin). The 20-year-old is tough, driven, has great vision, an awesome shot, and plays with an edge.
In a nutshell, he has a lot of valuable traits, but it was probably difficult for him to feel as if he truly belonged at Bayern Munich. Without a real landmark, “I’m here” moment, it was almost as if Bischof was left to meander through his first season in Bavaria.
Now, though, Bischof has that assurance that he has arrived…and he did so in a big way.
Sometimes, it is better late than never.
