As Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain prepare to square off for leg two of their electric Champions League tie with PSG leading 5-4 on aggregate, the referee for the contest has been announced.
Portuguese referee João Pinheiro will be the lead official for the match and will be tasked with trying to keep up with the lightning quick pace of both teams.
X account @iMiaSanMia compiled the games Pinheiro has worked involving Bayern Munich:
João Pinheiro has previously officiated two Bayern games:
-PSV
1-2 Bayern (25/26 UCL)
-Bayern 3-1 Slovan Bratislava (24/25 UCL)
There were no major controversies in those games for Bayern Munich, but neither was a particularly great performance from the Bavarians despite the wins. If you are looking for how Pinheiro might have negatively affected Bayern Munich in the past, you could stretch it and say that the yellow card that he issued to Vincent Kompany during the PSV Eindhoven match helped contribute to the head coach’s suspension for the first leg vs. PSG.
In the end, Pinheiro is going to have to just have to keep control of this game the best he can. It will be fast, physical, and likely feature a lot of complaining from both teams.
