Recent months have seen eye-popping donations reshape major universities, like the $300 million gift from alumnus David Booth to the University of Kansas this summer. Now, the University of Kentucky is joining
that list in a big way.
Billionaire philanthropist Tom Golisano
, founder of Paychex, announced a total donation of $253 million to six different children’s hospitals across the country, and Kentucky Children’s Hospital is among the beneficiaries. How will Kentucky use the money?
UK will receive $50 million from Golisano’s gift, marking one of the largest single donations in the hospital’s history. In recognition, the pediatric unit has been renamed Golisano Children’s at UK.
The Kentucky Children’s Hospital serves more than 92,000 clinic visits and 7,200 inpatient admissions each year. University leaders say the gift will fuel “acts of goodness to ensure a healthier, wealthier, and wiser Kentucky,” focusing on research, outreach, and facility improvements both in Lexington and through the hospital’s affiliate network.
“I am proud to make this gift to the University of Kentucky to support the health and well-being of children in the Commonwealth,” Golisano said in a statement.
This transformative gift pushes Golisano’s lifetime charitable contributions to over $1 billion, cementing his legacy as one of America’s most impactful philanthropists.
