It’s bad news that I’m not featuring the Pelicans game tonight.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs won their tenth-straight game, 7-0 over Indianapolis (Pirates) in 11 innings.
This game was scoreless for ten innings before the I-Cubs exploded for seven runs in the top of the 11th. Connor Noland threw the first five innings and allowed five hits. He struck out six and walked three.
After Iowa failed to score in the tenth, Caleb Kilian threw the bottom of the inning, held Indianapolis scoreless and picked up the win. Kilian threw a one-out
wild pitch to put a runner on third, but a strikeout, an intentional walk and another strikeout ended the inning.
DH James Triantos opened up the scoring with an RBI fielder’s choice in the 11th. He was 0 for 6 and scored later in the inning.
Right fielder Parker Chavers started the inning as the automatic runner that scored on the Triantos fielder’s choice and finished the scoring with an RBI single later in the inning. Chavers went 2 for 4.
Center fielder Owen Caissie went 2 for 4 with a walk and one run scored.
Here’s the play that opened the scoring.
RBI single for Jonny Long, who was 1 for 5.
Rafael Morel had a two-run double off a position player. He went 1 for 2.
Knoxville Smokies
The Knoxville Smokies burnt the Montgomery Biscuits (Rays), 10-0.
Tommy Romero gave up just three hits over the first seven innings on the way to the win. Romero was dominating, striking out seven and walking no one.
The Smokies scored four runs, including two home runs, in the first inning and never looked back. Third baseman BJ Murray Jr. hit a solo home run, his 19th on the year. Murray went 2 for 4 with two walks and three total RBI.
Two batters after Murray went deep, left fielder Jordan Nwogu connected for a two-run home run, his second on the season. Nwogu went 2 for 4 with a walk and a steal. He scored twice.
Second baseman Pedro Ramirez went 3 for 6 with three runs batted in.
Shortstop Reivaj Garcia was 3 for 5 with a double. He singled home one run and scored one run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost game one of their best-of-three division series, 4-1 to the Columbia Fireflies (Royals).
Alfredo Romero got the start and he surrendered just one run on five hits over 4.1 innings. Romero walked two, hit one batter and struck out four.
Noah Edders relieved Romero and got the loss. Edders allowed one unearned run on one hit over 1.2 innings. Edders did not have a strikeout or a walk.
The first three Pelicans batters of the game reached base and The Birds took the lead on an RBI double by DH Cole Mathis in the first. But Myrtle Beach only had one hit and two baserunners the rest of the way. The Pelicans struck out 14 times and drew zero walks.
Mathis was 1 for 4 with a double. Second baseman Ty Southisene led off the game with a single and scored the Pelicans’ only run. Southisene was also 1 for 4.
Myrtle Beach has tomorrow off as they travel to Columbia for games two and three, we hope. The Pelicans have to win both of them or their season ends.
The Mathis home run.
