Last night she was clocking Bella Mir, this morning she’s clocking in for work.
That’s the reality for bantamweight bruiser Alex Apodaca (4-1), who upset the 135-pound apple cart atop Dana White’s “Contender Series” at the promotion’s new-look Meta Apex facility in Las Vegas. Despite winning a UFC contract with her bookie-busting performance, the 32-year-old Apodaca had to report for work bright and early on Wednesday morning.
“I do work at an accounting firm. I work a full-time job, and that is like,
very difficult to manage with my schedule,” Apodaca said during the post-fight press conference. “But I actually like it and I like all the people a lot that I work with. I actually don’t think I’m just gonna quit. I think I’ll keep doing it. I like using my brain. I’m gonna keep doing it. They’ve been very supportive. I have so much gratitude towards them for that.”
I guess it beats scrubbing toilets.
“My bosses and everyone I work with, they know when I’m taking off for a fight,” Apodaca continued. “They know when I’m cutting weight. I’ll be on video calls with a black eye and they are totally just used to it now. It’s the coolest thing ever to have that amount of support from all the people in my life, especially the folks I work for. I am gonna party my ass off, but I have work in the morning. I have a call at like 7:30 am.”
No word yet on when Apodaca is expected to make her UFC debut but the UFC women’s bantamweight division (see the Top 15 here) could definitely use a fresh coat of paint. The Coloradan has only been competing professionally for about two years but did spent a couple of years on the amateur circuit dating back to early 2021.
