Postseason: The highlight of the entire season has to be Georgetown ending up as the #11 seed (read as: Dead Last) in the conference tournament but knocking off DePaul in the first round and Villanova in the quarterfinals before getting clipped
by 16 against UConn in the semifinals.
Notable Departures: I usually try to start this section with the guys that the team knew they were going to lose because of the end of their eligibility. Georgetown had two guys on the roster last season who were on their fifth year in college in the first place, so they had no chance to return by way of the new 5 years/5 seasons eligibility lawsuits. Both Langston Love and Jeremiah Williams were essentially bench options for the Hoyas last season, starting just eight times between the two, and Williams had seven of those and six of them were the final six games of the year. Williams averaged 5.9 points and 2.9 assists in a bit over 20 minutes a night, while Love was at 3.1 points in 12.5 minutes in 22 appearances. He essentially missed the last month and a half of the season, managing to scrape together 31 minutes in the Big East tournament to wrap up his time with the Hoyas.
That moves us along to the players that Georgetown lost to the transfer portal. The two most notable losses are KJ Lewis and Malik Mack, as they were two of Georgetown’s three double digit scorers last season. Lewis led the team at 14.9 points/game and also added 5.1 rebounds, 2. assists, and 2.1 steals, but he’s at USC now. Mack is the transfer departure that’s most going to injure the Hoyas, not because losing his 13.6 points and team high 4.1 assists is a problem, but because now he’s at Providence. I would like to take a moment to merely let you revel in the idea of Mack going for 30 in a PC blow out win over Georgetown at the AMP this season, and think about what that Friartown crowd would be like.
It seemed like Julius Halaifonua was turning into a dangerous big man in the Big East after putting up 9.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 28 starts as a sophomore last year. We’ll never find out, because he’s at Oklahoma State now. Isaiah Abraham was a most of the time starter for Georgetown last year after transferring over from UConn, but I guess he’s looking for something else after averaging 4.8 points and 2.9 rebounds, because he’s joining Halaifonua in the Big 12, just at Kansas State instead. Jayden Fort had a decent redshirt freshman year after an injury, putting up 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13.5 minutes per game. He’s gone now, electing to end up at Charlotte even though he’s from Washington, D.C. I’m always fascinated by guys who pick a close to home school and then bolt for a clearly worse situation, which is the case with the 49ers here since they haven’t been a KenPom top 100 team since Bobby Lutz left in 2010. Oh, man, remember Bobby Lutz back in Conference USA?
Notable Returners: Well, if Georgetown was the worst team in the Big East last season, is it a good thing or a bad thing that they don’t return much? “Not That” Caleb Williams is back after starting in 33 games and chipping in 8.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Kayvaun Mulready, the former top 100 prospect who followed Ed Cooley from Providence to Georgetown still hasn’t popped into something for the Hoyas. 5.4 points and 2.5 rebounds a game in about 17 minutes off the bench is fine, but I’m sure that Hoyas fans who were excited to swipe a highly regarded prospect from the Friars aren’t lining up to pay to watch him, either.
And that’s it, or at least that’s it for sure. Vince Iwuchukwu is listed on the Georgetown roster after putting up 11.6 points and a team high 6.1 rebounds per game, mostly off the bench for 23 minutes a game. However, last year was his fourth year of college hoops, and he doesn’t qualify for a medical redshirt even though he missed a lot of his freshman year after a summertime cardiac issue and he missed a bit more than a month of last year after an undisclosed medical procedure. So, Georgetown’s listing him on the roster, but he’s not currently definitely eligible as the five years/five seasons lawsuits continue to play out.
Key Additions: Let’s start with a guy who’s not listed on their roster but came up as I was tracking down precisely what’s going on with Vince Iwuchukwu. DePaul’s NJ Benson committed to Georgetown late in the summer, but after two years with the Blue Demons and two at Missouri State before that, his eligibility’s up in the air with the lawsuits as well. I’m not sure why Georgetown’s not listing him — they only published their roster since late September anyway — other than a procedural “not cleared yet” thing, but Iwuchukwu’s in the exact same boat and he’s on the official roster.
There are five other transfers on the Georgetown roster, and man, this is sure a collection of Guys. Based on what they did last year, Vyctorius Miller (6’5”, 190 lb. junior guard, Los Angeles, California) is probably the top transfer. He went for 10.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore for Oklahoma State, starting 26 times in 32 appearances. He was also a solid to good shooter at 37.5% behind the three point line. If you go based on Best Previous Season, then Jaland Lowe (6’2”, 175 lb. senior guard, Missouri City, Texas) is the top transfer. He averaged 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game as a sophomore for Pitt in 2024-25. He then transferred to Kentucky, suffered a preseason shoulder injury, played in nine games scattered before mid-January, and then missed the rest of the year. If he’s healthy now, then he’s probably going to be pretty good, as his per-40 minute numbers at UK matched his Pitt sophomore numbers pretty evenly.
Chol Machot (7’0”, 199 lb. junior center, Melbourne, Australia) seems promising after averaging 8.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in less than 20 minutes a game for Charleston last season. However, if Iwuchukwu and Benson are both going to be eligible — and the official position of Anonymous Eagle is that the NCAA is being stupid about this — then I don’t know how much big man playing time remains available. Josiah Parker (6’7”, 234 lb. sophomore forward, Huber Heights, Ohio) had a pretty good statistical line off the bench for Florida Atlantic last year at 9.6 points and 6.0 rebounds in less than 22 minutes a night. I am slightly worried about the value of a guy who is just 6’7” and can not shoot threes — 4-for-25 last year — but if the other stuff is working and he’s useful, hooray for him.
The last transfer is probably the biggest name that you know out of the group, because when a guy with a name like Elmarko Jackson (6’3”, 195 lb. senior guard, Marlton, New Jersey) is a top 25 prospect and he enrolls at Kansas, you kind of just pick up his name out of the air while you pay attention to college basketball. However! He’s not good, or at the very least has never quite popped off the page for the Jayhawks. 68 appearances across two seasons with an injury redshirt in the middle, just 18 starts with only 1 last year, and for all of that time, he’s averaging 4.6 points and less than two rebounds and assists per game.
Georgetown also has three new freshman and a mid-season addition from last year/redshirt freshman on the roster. From the looks of things, none of them really merit attention from recruiting brains like at 247 Sports, so we can just skip past them.
Coach: The decomposing husk of Ed Cooley’s reputation, going into his fourth season as Hoyas head coach and 21st as a Division 1 head coach. He has a record of 43-57 with the Hoyas and 377-279 overall.
Outlook: I want to give Ed Cooley credit for something here. Last year looked like it was firing deep into a nose dive as the Hoyas tumbled from #82 in the KenPom.com preseason rankings to as low as #109 for about a week in mid-January. It could have gotten so, so much worse. However, even with a seven game losing streak towards the end of the season, Georgetown wobbled back to #83 heading into the conference tournament. Thanks to rumbling into the tourney semifinals from the #11 seed, Georgetown managed to finish the year at #74 at KenPom. That’s not just Ed Cooley’s best finish at Georgetown, that’s Georgetown’s best finish since the season where Patrick Ewing went 7-9 in conference play and then won the Big East tournament outta nowhere in 2021.
However, the fact remains that Georgetown finished with a losing record last season, Cooley’s second in three seasons in charge over there, and the fourth losing season in five years. Even worse, the only reasons it hasn’t been seven straight losing seasons is 1) Thomas Sorber dragged the Hoyas to a 15-9 record before he got hurt and 2) Four surprising wins by Ewing after going into the Big East tournament at 9-12.
Hey, wanna play “What’s Ed Cooley’s Record At Georgetown Without Thomas Sorber?” It’s a fun game I just invented! Remember: He’s 43-57 overall!
28-48! Ed Cooley is 16-44 in Big East play overall, but 10-37 without Sorber!
And now he’s bringing back two rotation players — three if Iwuchukwu gets legally cleared — and there are no obvious impact transfers or freshmen here. Sure, Jaland Lowe if you squint at his 2024-25 numbers, but is he good or did he have good numbers on a Pitt team that went 8-12 in a historically awful ACC? And are we sure he’s healthy and capable of being that guy again? Sure, I like NJ Benson, presuming he gets cleared, but he was on a DePaul team that went 16-16 and 8-12 in a bad Big East last year and was 1-2 against this Georgetown team that finished last.
And by the way, because I brought it up last year and I’ll keep bringing it up until it stops being notable: What’s with Georgetown losing three guys to the portal after they intentionally transferred in while Ed Cooley was in charge? KJ Lewis and Isaiah Abraham have bounced after one year, and Malik Mack has decided to roll the dice at Providence after two years with the Hoyas. Generally speaking, if someone goes Harvard — Georgetown — Providence, they’re going in the wrong direction, but I really can’t blame Mack for getting out of this situation.
You can flail around and reset your roster constantly if you’re winning like Rick Pitino is at St. John’s. You can’t flail and reset when you’re 14 games under .500. Oh, hey! Remember when Georgetown could have hired Rick Pitino and didn’t? Fun times!
None of the vibes are great here. None of the vibes are even passable. It’s all bad, and I don’t know how much longer Georgetown is willing to let this go on with less than 6,000 people passing the turnstiles on average.
