One of the more interesting developments in the men’s Royal Rumble match in Saudi Arabia involved WWE teasing a fight multiple times between Brock Lesnar and its newest star, Oba Femi. The two big men did eventually get physical with each other, and Brock eliminated Femi from the match.
Their brief time mixing it up has led to a lot of speculation and rumors about a possible WrestleMania 42 match pitting Lesnar versus Femi. With that in mind, the No-Contest Wrestling Podcast asked Oba how much of his
Rumble interaction with The Beast was planned ahead of time. Femi confirmed that it was designed by WWE to tease the match and see how fans would respond, hopefully with an eye towards building on it down the line.
“We have something there. It’s a big money fight. We’re not going to blow our load on just a Rumble interaction. There’s so much more that can happen there. So we’ll see down the line.
…It was always designed to be a teaser, just to see how the people react to it…There wasn’t too much interaction. It was a face off. It was a teaser. We knew what it was from the jump. Now we know we have something. We really have something, and I think going from here now we’ll probably have more interaction down the line.”
With the talk of load-blowing out of the way, host O’Shea Jackson Jr. brought up Brock’s history of crushing Black wrestlers in WWE, the most famous example of which is how he squashed Kofi Kingston in seconds to end his reign as WWE champion. Jackson pleaded with Femi to be the one Black wrestler who finally puts Brock down. Oba was sharp to immediately respond by naming the one Black wrestler in WWE who already has Brock’s number.
Jackson: “I’m that guy. I’m Petty Guerrero, bro. So I just got to point it out. Between Big E, Kofi Kingston, Omos, Black people need a victory, bro. You’ve got to beat Brock Lesnar, bro. ‘Cause Brock sees Black success [and goes] I’m about to knock that out…and extinguish this.”
Femi: “But hold on. We have to remember something. There’s one Black person that Brock was not able to stop his momentum.”
Jackson: “Let me know.”
Femi: “Raheem!”
Jackson: “Ah hahahaha! They’re gonna love that one!”
Femi: “Raheem! Raheem was immune to Brock’s stuff, so one win for us.”
Jackson: “That’s right, baby. The Nightmare, baby.”
Do you think Oba Femi will soon join this very short list of Black WWE stars who can actually beat Brock Lesnar, or are you worried that history will repeat itself if WWE books Lesnar vs. Femi at WrestleMania 42? Let me know in the comments below, Cagesiders.
