After a saga that’s dragged on for far too long, nearly the entire summer, Carney Chukwuemeka is at long last a Borussia Dortmund player, just as everyone had expected and predicted at the start of the transfer window. Chukwuemeka was of course at Dortmund already in the second half of last season as a loanee, but now he’s bona fide.
BVB are reportedly paying around €25m for this permanent transfer, with some add-ons and a sizeable sell-on clause (though no one’s put any actual percentage to that,
or whether it’s a sell-on of any future fee or just any potential profits). Either way, it’s an okay deal for us and a potentially great one for them, if the 21-year-old midfielder can develop into the great player that he’s clearly capable of becoming.
Chukwuemeka has signed a five-year contract with Dortmund, who are looking forward to reaping the benefits of that development.
“We are delighted that we have been able to secure the long-term services of such a talented player as Carney and can now work together on his development. Carney has enormous potential, which he has already demonstrated with us in the second half of the season. He can make the difference by repeatedly finding solutions in tight spaces and gives us an additional footballing element in midfield that will do us a lot of good.”

Boyhood Chelsea-fan Chukwuemeka was among the earliest heralds of BlueCo’s youth-focused transfer policy at Chelsea, joining from Aston Villa back in 2022. Unfortunately, he leaves with just 32 appearances and 2 goals to his name.
Good luck in Dortmund, Carns; perhaps we’ll meet again!
Thank you Chelsea for everything. Forever grateful 💙.
