Prior to the start of the team’s series against the Cardinals, the Mets have activated Francisco Alvarez from the injured list. To make room, the team optioned Hayden Senger to Triple-A.
Alvarez exited the team’s game on Tuesday, May 12 after swinging at a pitch and experiencing some pain as a result. He was eventually diagnosed with a meniscus tear in his right knee. The original prognosis had him missing anywhere from six to eight weeks, and today marks four weeks to the day since he last played
a major league game. That is, quite frankly, a preposterous recovery time, as he beat the high end of his return window by four weeks.
Before going down with his injury, Alvarez was hitting .241/.317/.393 with four home runs, 12 runs scored, 10 runs batted in, and a 104 wRC+ in 37 games. In three rehab games for Triple-A Syracuse, he went 3-for-14 with two doubles. The last hurdle for him to clear was catching back-to-back games in the minors, which he did over the weekend.
In Alvarez’s absence, Luis Torrens has handled a bulk of the catching duties, hitting .226/.284/.355 with one home run, eight runs scored, and seven runs batted in over 21 games while excelling defensively behind the plate. Senger, who returns to Syracuse following Alvarez’s return, was hitting .133/.133/.333 and recently hit his first career major league homer.
