Dalton Smith won his first world title tonight in Brooklyn, New York, stopping Subriel Matias to win the WBC super lightweight title.
It was the first world title fight for the 28-year-old Smith, who came
over from the United Kingdom and remains unbeaten at 19-0 (14 KO), scoring the upset — though not a huge one — over the more experienced Matias (23-3, 22 KO).
The stoppage came right as it seemed Matias, 33, had taken over the physicality of the bout, and appeared to be wearing the challenger down. A right hand dropped Matias, and the fight was stopped by the referee.
It’s the second world title Matias has lost in the last two years. He was upset by Liam Paro, losing the IBF belt, in 2024, and won the WBC belt last year against Alberto Puello, losing it here in his first defense.
Smith will now be ordered to face Puello (24-1, 10 KO), as per the pre-fight agreement for this bout.
