Back when he went by Edge in the WWF and WWE, Adam Copeland already said goodbye twice.
The first was in 2011, when we all thought he’d never wrestle again because of the condition of his neck and spine. The second was 12 years later, after medical technology advanced and Copeland’s own body healed enough to allow him to come back in 2020, when he got to celebrate 25 years in the business by wrestling in his hometown, against his friend Sheamus for the first time, before leaving WWE for AEW.
It explains
why he doesn’t seem hung up on his next farewell, or really thinking about it all — whether that goodbye is just to AEW, or to pro wrestling as a whole.
We say that based on his pre-Double or Nothing interview with Clutch Points this week. That’s where we learned that if you want to find out when Cope’s current deal is up? Don’t ask him:
“I broke my leg, so there’s injury time added, and I had to go film Beekeeper [2] and Percy Jackson, so [that’s time] added. Anytime I have to take a break, that gets added on the back end.
”I’m not even sure when it’s up.”
And with so many of his contemporaries like AJ Styles and rivals like John Cena already retiring, is the Rated R Superstar thinking about his for real, no takebacks goodbye?
“I already had my sendoff. This time, it’ll be my choice, and that makes it a different experience entirely. I don’t care if I get this big, tearful sendoff.”
“I have no preconceived idea of what it needs to be.”
See. Told ya.
Copeland teams with his long-time friend and tag partner Christian Cage — for the last time if they lose — against FTR in an “I Quit” match Sunday (May 24) on AEW’s Double or Nothing PPV from Queens, New York. It won’t be Cope’s retirement match.
Or will it…
