This week saw players post monster double-doubles, a conference-record 29-rebound performance and a huge second-half comeback over a nationally-ranked conference rival. We need your help to pick who is our women’s player of the week.
The finalists are Ryley Goebel (Northern Iowa), Payton Hull (Abilene Christian), Megan Norris (UC Davis), Adrianna Smith (Maine) and Riley Weiss (Columbia).
Ryley Goebel – Northern Iowa
Goebel had a sensational game in UNI’s win over Indiana State. The senior forward notched 32 points, 16 rebounds,
five blocks, and three steals. Those 16 rebounds were a career high, and 32 points matched a career best. That was her ninth double-double of the season. She shot 12-of-16 from the floor. The Urbana, Iowa, native became the only player in Missouri Valley history with 200+ career blocks and steals.
Payton Hull – Abilene Christian
Hull averaged 30 points per game to lead ACU to a pair of in-state rivalry road wins. She poured in 36 points in a five-point win at Tarleton State. That performance broke the program’s Division I record and was the most points scored by any WAC player this season. The junior opened the week with 24 points in a W at UT Arlington. Hull was nearly perfect from the charity stripe as she went 13-of-14 and made 5 of her 9 attempts from 3-point land. She has eclipsed the 20-point mark in six of her last eight games.
Megan Norris – UC Davis
Thursday was a memorable night for Norris. She pulled down a Big West record 29 rebounds in the Aggies’ triple overtime win over UC San Diego. As part of that performance, she broke the program’s single-season rebound mark. She scored 13 points and four assists for a double-double in the longest game in program history. The redshirt senior closed the week with 16 points on 60% shooting with 14 rebounds in Saturday’s win at Long Beach State. The center from Menlo Park, Calif., averaged 14.0 points, 21.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for the week. She sits third nationally in rebounding (13.1 per game) and double-doubles (17).
Adrianna Smith – Maine
Smith averaged 24.5 points and 14 rebounds for the Black Bears last week. The senior registered 25 points and 13 rebounds in a win at UMBC. The Reston, Va., product followed it up with 24 points and 15 boards in a loss at NJIT. The forward is the only player in Division I averaging 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists per game.
Riley Weiss – Columbia
Weiss averaged 22 points, three rebounds and 1.5 steals in a 2-0 week for the Lions. She came up big in Columbia’s 70-56 win over No. 24 Princeton. The Lions trailed by six at halftime and then outscored the Tigers 45-25 in the final two quarters to sweep the season series for a second straight year. She scored 20 of her 23 points after the half and went 7-of-9 from the floor and 3-for-3 from deep during that stretch. The win created a tie atop the Ivy League standings between the two teams and gave Columbia the tiebreaker.
The guard posted 21 points and four rebounds one day later as Columbia knocked off Penn. This game featured a hot start for the Lions, who jumped out to a 27-7 lead and never looked back. Weiss shot 7-for-17 (41.2%) from deep for the week. She leads the Ivy at 19.7 points per game. That mark as well as her 2.87 3-pointers per game are top 25 nationally.
