The Athletics are back home this week starting a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox that kicked off the homestand tonight at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. Luis Morales, the 22-year-old rookie, will go up against 26-year-old lefty Garrett Crochet for the Red Sox.
Morales seemed to be cruising through the first inning and with two outs had a 3-2 count on Trevor Story, who launched his 24th homer of the season, giving the Sox an early 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second inning Nick Sogard
singled on a line drive to center scoring Masataka Yoshida. Jarren Duran followed with a single to drive in Ceddanne Rafaela.
In the top of the fifth, Carlos Narváez homered to left center field. Jarren Duran followed with a double and then stole third. Bregman singled to drive Duran home. That gave the Red Sox a 5-0 lead. After a Story pop out, Brady Basso replaced Luis Morales. Morales final line was 4.2 innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two.
After tossing two+ scoreless innings, Scott McGough replaced Brady Basso. Alex Bregman singled and Trevor Story doubled, sending Bregman to third with no outs. Romy Gonzalez singled to left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, Alex Bregman scored, and Trevor Story went to third. Yoshida singled, driving in Story. That brought the score to 7-0.
Garrett Crochet was just too much for the A’s hitters tonight, and ultimately they fell 7-0 to the Red Sox.
