Michigan took another hit in the secondary late Thursday night when starting safety TJ Metcalf entered the transfer portal.
The junior from Birmingham, Alabama came to Ann Arbor last winter after two successful season with Arkansas, where he appeared in 24 games with 11 starts. With the Razorbacks, Metcalf totaled 72 tackles, one tackle for loss, 10 pass breakups and three interceptions.
After transferring to Michigan with his brother, Tevis, last offseason, TJ won a starting job and never looked back. The 6-foot-1, 200 pounder played both safety and nickel for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, and he had 58 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception and five pass deflections. His performance earned him All-Big Ten honorable mention.
Metcalf will have one year of eligibility remaining, and wherever he goes, he will bring a high number of starts, strong tackling ability in open space and cover skills from the safety position.
Since the hiring of head coach Kyle Whittingham, the Wolverines have seen several defensive backs hit the portal, and they lost a couple starters on Thursday night alone in Brandyn Hillman and Metcalf. Others to have entered the transfer portal include Elijah Dotson, Jayden Sanders, Jordan Young and Jaden Mangham.
