Happy Monday, Athletics Nation! Hope you are having a safe and enjoyable holiday.
After getting swept by the Rangers in a tough home series over the weekend, the A’s look like they could use some pitching reinforcements. Thankfully, number one starter Luis Severino is ready to get back on the mound, slated to start tomorrow’s game against the Cardinals.
Luis has been on the injured list for nearly a month with an oblique strain. The injury came
at a particularly bad time for the veteran righty, who had won four consecutive starts when his discomfort flared up. Initially, the A’s seemed to be in a good position to weather Sevy’s downtime, with rookie Jacob Lopez confounding hitters and Jack Perkins appearing to settle nicely into the starting rotation following his debut start on August 3. But both young pitchers are now on the IL with injuries of their own.
No. 4 prospect Luis Morales made his debut MLB start the day after Sevy was placed on the IL and has since become yet another impressive young talent bolstering the A’s pitching depth. But with Lopez and Perkins out, the back end of the rotation is looking vulnerable again as J.T. Ginn and Mason Barnett both got pounded by the Rangers in West Sacramento.
Severino hasn’t quite pitched up to expectations in his first season with the A’s, posting a lackluster 4.82 ERA through 24 starts. Regardless, he has been the A’s most valuable pitcher in 2025 with 2.2 fWAR, and Sevy had been trending up since mid July, so having another seasoned arm back in the rotation is a most welcome development as the A’s head into the final month of the season looking to finish strong.
Have a terrific week, AN.
