Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas knows the odds are stacked against his team when it faces off with Bayern Munich in the Champions League, but he can see the progress made by his club on the field,
in its talent development practices, and in the board room.
“Our club is currently proving that we can compete with the big European clubs, even though we don’t have the same financial resources. For me, Bayern are currently one of the three best teams in the world. And scoring a goal at the Allianz Arena is probably one of the toughest tasks for any team in the world right now. It will be a game where Bayern are the clear favorites. On our side, we only have the ambition and dreams of our players,” Varandas told Bild’s Nico Linner (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “According to Transfermarkt, we have the most valuable squad in Europe outside the top five leagues. This is the result of the excellent work of our youth academy and scouting department. I don’t want to single out any particular names, but we have no doubt that many top European clubs are monitoring several players from our squad.”
Varandas is right to be proud of the job that his team is doing and, yes, it will be very tough for his team to be able to take down the Bavarians. The game will be played on the pitch, though, and as we all know, anything can happen in between the lines during those 90 minutes.
Surely, though, Bayern Munich knows that, too, and will not look past a very good Sporting CP side.
