Goooooood
morning everyone! We’ve entered the month of October and playoff baseball is in full swing! Let’s check in on scores, news, and more from around the sport.
MLB playoff scores…
- Tarik Skubal did his thing in a tight 2-1 Tigers victory over the Guardians.
- The Cubs captured Game 1 of their Wild Card series against the Padres 3-1, thanks to homers from Carson Kelly and Seiya Suzuki.
- Garrett Crochet out-dueled Max Fried in the Red Sox’s 3-1 victory over the Yankees in the Bronx. The juggernaut Yanks are now just a loss away from elimination.
- The Dodgers steamrolled the Reds in Game 1 by a 10-5 score thanks to two homers from Teoscar Hernández.
In Mariners news…
- The M’s announced their postseason taxi squad, which surprisingly includes top prospect Colt Emerson. It’s worth recalling that in 2022, the Mariners included Cade Marlowe on their postseason roster before he had made his MLB debut (Marlowe did not appear in a playoff game that year, as Emerson is unlikely to this year).
- Rick Rizzs and Dave Sims joined Jayson Stark’s podcast to hash out the AL MVP debate, preview the postseason, and much more.
- Jerry Dipoto spoke plainly with Daniel Kramer about his ups and downs as head of the Mariners’ baseball operations apparatus, opening up about both his triumphs and his regrets from years past.
Around the league…
- Ron Washington and Ray Montgomery have both been let go by the Angels, who join the long list of teams looking for new skippers for 2026.
- The Tampa Bay Rays finalized the sale of the franchise to Florida-based realtor Patrick Zalupski, who has previously signaled his intentions to keep the team in Tampa.
- The Guardians added top prospect Chase DeLauter to their active postseason roster (he has not yet made his big league debut).
- Danny Russell at DRaysBay tried to diagnose what went wrong with the Rays in 2025.
- Chaim Bloom, now in charge of baseball operations for the Cardinals, says the team will retain manager Oli Marmol for 2026.
- The Athletic baseball staff unveiled their postseason predictions, with most writers falling in line behind the Phillies and Mariners as favorites. ($)
- The Defector staff highlighted the things they’re most looking forward to this MLB postseason.
