Despite still being a young coach at 40 years of age, Anthony Barry has worked with a number of notable players and personalities. His stints as an assistant coach for Belgium and Portugal—working alongside stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Cristiano Ronaldo—helped prepare the Englishman to follow Thomas Tuchel to Bayern Munich. There, he encountered Harry Kane and witnessed the striker’s elite quality firsthand. Following Tuchel’s departure from Bayern, he and Barry resumed their work with Kane on the international
stage as England’s manager and assistant coach, respectively.
Barry has now spent years working with the former Tottenham Hotspur striker and, speaking to The Athletic, only had good things to say about the 33-year-old, even in comparison to all the superstars he has witnessed over the years.
“He [Kane] is the best ball striker I have ever worked with, better than all the great finishers I have ever worked with. Cristiano and all those players,” Barry stated (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “You say it is phenomenal but I would say it’s just normal in terms of Harry. What you see in the warm-up. The repetition of the ball strike, the clarity. It’s simply a level I have never experienced, with both feet.”
While Barry only worked with Ronaldo later in his career, such praise remains of the highest order. That is simply a testament to Kane’s quality—making extraordinary goals look ordinary, and the impossible look routine.
